Preposition of Space - Place and Direction

Preposition are short words that link other words or phrases within a sentence. They generally show a relationship that exists between them. For Example in, at, on etc. Some prepositions are made up of more than one word. They are called complex prepositions. For Example as far as, up to, etc.

Preposition of Space - Place and Direction:

We can use preposition of space to indicate position or direction. The object of a preposition of position is the place where someone or something is. A preposition of direction is used with a verb of movement:

  • Dad hung the picture above the fireplace. (position)
  • A delivery van was parked behind our car. (position)
  • We live in a small apartment. (position)
  • They walked towards the gate. (direction)
  • The rabbit ran down a hole. (direction)
  • A cold wind was blowing from the east. (direction)
  • Many preposition of space can indicate both position and direction in different contexts:

  • How many people were aboard the train? (position)
  • The passengers climbed aboard the boat. (direction)
  • I found my missing slipper under the bed. (position)
  • The spider crawled under the mat. (direction)
  • We rowed across the river. (direction) 
  • There is a bridge across the river.(position)
  • Common prepositions of places & direction: On, at, in, by, from, to, towards, up, down, across, between, among, through, in front of, behind, above, over, under, below, etc. are the most common.

    Some preposition and their usage:

  • For is used to show somewhere.
  • In is used for something or somebody inside a limited area.
  • Into is used in the direction of something
  • At is used when we relate to a place in terms of its function or purpose.
  • On is used for a fixed point on a surface, or with words like floor or ceiling., public transport.
  • Across is used to mean from one side to another.
  • Over means resting on the surface, or to a position higher, on the far or opposite side of something.
  • Above is used in the sense of at or to higher place or position.
  • Under is used to mean a position that is below something.
  • Underneath is used same as under but is used for things only.
  • Below is used to indicate something/ somebody at a lower level or position than somebody/ something.
  • Beyond is used to indicate to the further side of something.
  • Below / Under / Beneath

    A. 'Below' and 'under' both mean lower than ( in level) and sometimes either can be used. But under usually denotes physical cantact and below denotes space between the things. e.g.
